Title: Director of Retail
Reports to: Director of Golf
Collaborates with: Head Golf Professional, Assistant Golf Professionals, Director of Racquet Sports, Caddie Manager, and Golf Services Team.
All Golf Team members at Wayzata Country Club regularly engage with members, guests, vendors, and other departmental teammates.
Position Description:
Wayzata Country Club seeks a dynamic, energetic, and team-oriented professional to provide Platinum Service leadership within its retail operations.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a true passion for retail, a drive to seek out a compelling brand assortment that appeals to a broad member mix, exceptional interpersonal skills, the ability to engage warmly with members, guests, and teammates and curate a vibrant retail experience that supports all of Wayzata's outdoor pursuits, including golf, racquets, and aquatics.
Experience Required
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Including, but not limited to, the following:
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, or Fashion preferred.
- Minimum five years' experience in retail management at a private club or high-end resort preferred.
- Minimum four years' experience developing and managing a buying plan.
- Verifiable experience in utilizing social media for retail promotion. The ability to create compelling social media cadence and content highlighting new arrivals, new brands, seasonal merchandise, etc. will be vital.
- Proficiency in point-of-sale systems (Northstar experience preferred but not required) and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
Essential Responsibilities

Daily Responsibilities
Merchandising & Buying
- Oversee buying, receiving, pricing, and visual display and sales of merchandise for the golf and racquet shops (annual retail sales of approx. $1.1M with strong growth potential).
- Collaborate with Controller, Director of Golf, and Director of Racquets to develop and maintain an Open-to-Buy (OTB) plan.
- Meet with vendors to preview upcoming product lines and identify new opportunities.
- Be a skilled negotiator; this is crucial as it will allow you to control costs, manage your budget effectively, and get the best possible terms.
- Continuously evaluate and refine merchandise assortment plan based on member engagement, sales performance, and feedback. Monitor sales trends and new brands in the market.
- Create innovative merchandising displays and promotional campaigns aligned with product deliveries and seasonal trends.
- Coordinate tournament merchandise and all logoed product orders adhering to WCC brand standards.
- Organize compelling trunk shows, special promotions, and seasonal sales.
- Maintain an exceptional, first-class shopping environment, including gift wrapping, shipping, and special orders.
Inventory & Financial Management
- Supervise and lead inventory control processes, including monthly physical inventories and regular spot checks with the goal of little to no shrinkage.
- Manage inventory levels and reorders to maintain optimal stock levels and clean seasonal exits. Develop and implement a markdown cadence as part of maintaining optimal inventory levels.
- Maintain cost of goods sold (COGS) within budget and ensure margin goals are met.
- Utilize Northstar/TAI POS for SKU creation, pricing, and merchandise receiving.
- Manage timely invoice processing, vendor payments, and back-office tasks.
- Prepare sales forecasts and analyze stock mix, turnover ratios, and sell-through performance.
Member Service & Experience
- Build strong relationships with members to ensure high engagement and satisfaction.
- Oversee a robust special order program from placement to delivery, ensuring proactive communication.
- Address member and vendor concerns with professionalism and prompt resolution.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of Club policies, events, and operations to assist members effectively.
- Represent the Club with integrity and professionalism at all times.
Leadership & Team Collaboration
- Supervise shop staff to ensure operational execution and alignment with budgetary and OTB goals. Foster a "can do" atmosphere in the retail environment.
- Conduct regular product and apparel training for staff to enhance selling and product or brand knowledge.
- Assist Golf Operations during peak times by supporting the Golf Shop counter or events.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Golf & Head Golf Professional.
Travel & Market Events
- Attend national and local PGA Merchandise Shows and relevant apparel/gift events.
(2-3 trips per year.)

Work Schedule
- Typically, 5 days per week in-season, with flexibility out of season.
- May require 6-day workweeks, evenings, weekends, overtime, or holidays as business needs dictate.
- Physical requirements include:
- The ability to lift 25 pounds.
- The ability to stand and move about retail and club areas for extended periods of time.
- Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping and pulling.
Benefits
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The club will provide an attractive compensation and benefits package commensurate with experience and qualifications. This includes but is not limited to:
- Base salary commensurate with experience plus bonus potential of 10% of base salary.
- Association dues (PGA, LPGA, AGM)
- Uniform allowance
- Meals while on duty
- Golf privileges
Full-time eligible employees will be offered health benefits (including medical, dental, vision, Life & disability etc.), 401(k) program (match after waiting period), six paid holidays, paid vacation, and sick pay (after meeting eligibility waiting period.)
